Your Google Business Profile is your real website
The decision happens in the map, not on a website
Someone types "plumber near me". Google shows a map with three businesses, star ratings and a call button. Most people choose from that box and never scroll further. Your Google Business Profile is the storefront — a website is what they check afterwards, if at all.
It's free, and an hour of proper setup outperforms months of anything else you could do for local visibility.
The setup that actually matters
Primary category is the single biggest lever. Choose the most specific one that matches your core work ("Plumber", not "Contractor"). Add secondary categories for genuine services only. Wrong primary category is the most common reason a profile never ranks.
Service area, not a fake address. If you work from home, hide the address and set the towns you actually cover. Listing a whole region you can't serve dilutes you everywhere.
Complete every field. Hours (including whether you do emergencies), phone, services list with descriptions, payment methods. Google visibly favours completeness.
Photos are the conversion lever
Profiles with real photos get substantially more calls than empty ones. What to post:
- Real jobs, before/after — you already take these (and you should)
- Your van, your team, your face. Trust is a person, not a logo.
- Add a few every month. A profile that hasn't been touched in two years reads as closed.
Reviews are the ranking and the reason
Reviews influence both position and click-through. The mechanics of getting them consistently are here. Two additions specific to Google: reply to every review (Google reads engagement), and encourage clients to mention the job and the town naturally — "boiler replacement in Springfield" is exactly the language future searchers use.
The free weekly post nobody uses
Google Posts let you publish a short update with a photo. Almost no tradesperson does it, which makes it cheap visibility. One a week is plenty: a job you just finished, a seasonal reminder ("time to service your AC before summer"), an availability note.
Turn the calls into signed work
Getting found is half the job — converting fast is the other half. Pro Speak Artisan lets you send a priced, professional estimate from the client's driveway, so you're the first to respond (speed is the biggest factor).
