How to get more 5-star reviews (without begging)

Why reviews beat every other marketing channel

A homeowner choosing between two plumbers rarely compares prices first — they compare proof. Reviews are the only marketing asset that keeps working for years, costs nothing, and comes from work you already did.

The moment that decides everything

Most tradespeople ask at the wrong time: days later, by email, when the job is a fading memory. Ask at peak satisfaction — the moment the client sees the finished work and says something positive. That sentence ("oh, that's much better") is your cue. Not tomorrow. Then.

The script

Don't say "leave me a review." Make it easy and specific:

"Really glad you're happy with it. Honestly, reviews are how people find me — would you mind leaving a quick one? I'll text you the direct link right now, it takes about thirty seconds."

Then send the link while you're still standing there. A link sent later competes with the client's entire life. A link sent now competes with nothing.

Remove every point of friction

  • Direct link only. Google Business Profile gives you a short review link — use it. Never "search for us on Google."
  • Ask one person. In a couple, ask whoever was most engaged during the job.
  • One follow-up, max. If nothing after 3 days: "No pressure at all — here's that link again if you get a minute." Then stop.
  • Never offer anything in exchange. Paid or incentivized reviews violate Google's policy and can wipe your profile.

What to do about a bad review

Do not argue. A calm public reply is not for the reviewer — it's for the hundred future clients who will read it:

"Thanks for the feedback, Marc. You're right that we arrived late on the Tuesday and I'm sorry about it. I've called you to arrange the adjustment on the seal. — Tony"

Ownership plus a concrete action reads as professional. Defensiveness reads as risk. One well-handled negative review among fifteen positives actually increases trust — a flawless profile looks fake.

Make asking automatic

The reason artisans stop asking is that it depends on remembering. Tie it to something that already happens: Pro Speak Artisan marks the moment an invoice is paid — the natural peak-satisfaction trigger — and you can schedule a reminder to send the review link right then.
