Before/after photos: the cheapest insurance a tradesperson can buy

·1 min read·By Pro Speak Artisan

The dispute you win in 30 seconds

"The wall was not damaged before you came." With a timestamped before photo, this conversation lasts thirty seconds. Without it, it lasts three registered letters and sometimes a courtroom.

Four returns on two minutes

1. Dispute protection. Timestamped photos of the site before you touch anything document pre-existing damage, cluttered access, hidden pipe runs. They are your witnesses.

2. Invoice justification. A during photo of the opened wall shows the client what "replace corroded fitting behind tile" actually involved. Invoices with visible proof get challenged far less.

3. Scope evidence. The photo of the water heater's rusted tank justifies why replacement, not repair. It defends your professional judgment.

4. Free marketing. A clean before/after pair is the single most convincing content a trade business can post. Your future clients believe photos, not adjectives.

The discipline (keep it stupid simple)

  • Before: 4–6 wide shots + closeups of anything already damaged. Before unloading the tools.
  • During: whatever gets hidden later — inside walls, under floors, connections.
  • After: same angles as the before shots. The pair is what sells.

The habit dies when photos rot in your camera roll, unfindable. They must be attached to the job.

Pro Speak Artisan attaches before/after photos to each estimate, keeps them private to your records, and lets you opt-in print selected proof photos on the invoice PDF. More guides.
